4000 metres

Brilliant sunshine this morning. We didn’t set off until nine, leaving time for the snowfall from 2 days ago to melt.

We climbed up a sun-drenched massif. Unfortunately as we got higher masses of clouds began to swirl around us. The higher up the more snowbound it got. The track was paved on the first leg though the paving stones weren’t that even.
Up to then it wasn’t too dangerous. Vipin and his assistant Tenjin were with us all the way.

After about 3 solid hours walking we finally got to the temple. We stopped for a relaxing pause there. I ate a Kit Kat and drank a Limca – a lemon-flavoured Indian soft drink. We were at 3600 metres and it was starting to get quite cold.

Then we set off walking again. Vipin and Tenjin helped me out a lot because it was really steep and slippery.
Vipin would start walking and then it was my turn, one foot at a time. Tenjin was right behind me to stop me falling.
The crampons on Dad’s shoes just weren’t up to it – they were practically obsolete and slipped all the time.

An hour’s hard slog later, with a lot of effort, we made it to the peak of Chandershila, at an altitude of 4000 metres!
At that level oxygen starts to rarefy and you breathe a bit faster. The air there is so pure and you feel so calm.
There was a tiny temple there and just in front of it over my head a little bell. I rang it.

We set up camp behind the temple and ate heartily. There were even sausages for lunch! 🙂 All around us there were little piles of stones. There were quite a few crows and an eagle gliding majestically around the summit. Actually it wasn’t an eagle, but a bird from the same family, with a 2 metre wingspan!

We set back off on the walk down. I learnt how to walk on hands and knees where the passes were too narrow. It hailed all the way down to the temple (little drops of frozen snow that at least don’t soak you).

The rest of the way down was a breeze and when we got back to base camp a radiant sun was shining.

In the evening we sat around a fiercely glowing fire.

    Hello Gabriel.
I think your blog is really cool.
Well actually, sometimes too warm and sometimes too cold!
And there are way too many mosquitoes and too much meat.

    Congratulations on climbing the mountain!
You are going to be a star.
I wish I had done that when I was sixteen!

I thought you might like this extract from an old pop song…
It’s called « Take That » from « Nobody Else » (or something like that)
and it makes me think of faraway places and of mountains covered in snow.

You can listen to it on Youtube from this link here

Some of the words to the song:

We’ve come so far and we’ve reached so high
And we’ve looked each day and night in the eye
And we’re still so young and we hope for more

Been on this path of life for so long
Feel I’ve walked a thousand miles
Sometimes strolled hand in hand with love
    Everybody’s been there
With danger on my mind I would stand on the line of hope
I knew I could make it
Once I knew the boundaries I looked into the clouds and saw
    My face in the moonlight
Just then I realised what a fool I could be
Just cause I look so high I don’t have to see me
Finding a paradise wasn’t easy but still
There’s a road going down the other side of this hill

Never forget where you’ve come here from
Never pretend that it’s all real
Someday soon this will all be someone else’s dream

    L.
